Is My Old Furniture Worth Moving?

When you’re packing for a move, the usual rule of thumb is that you should bring everything. That means every sweater, every pair of shoes, every chair, every desk, every television – wait, this is getting heavy!

The thing is, if your family is upgrading to a larger house, it might be time to upgrade your furniture as well. Maybe you don’t need to bring those bargain tables and chairs you built yourself, the ones that wobbled from day one. Not mention the ratty old sofa – is that a pattern, or just a stain that wouldn’t come out?

Besides, buying furniture will allow you to select pieces that accentuate your new home: a glass table to catch the light from the sunroof; an L-shaped leather sectional to accommodate the spacious living room; a California king bed, so that you can stretch out every morning and appreciate the… view?

Of course, your decision doesn’t have to be black and white. You can keep some pieces and throw away others, or even gradually replace your furniture in the years following your move. Take a long look at your furniture, and try to figure out which items are worth taking with you.
